Advanced Web Authoring
Web Quest

Introduction
You have just been hired by a web design firm to develop a web site for a client. A representative from our class will become your client.

You must work together to create a web site that will meet his/her needs.

First, you must research different styles of industry-based web sites, examining them for their various strengths and designs. Then, you will meet again with your client to review your research and develop objectives for the web site needed.

You will not only design the site, but develop a plan to keep the site current throughout the semester.

Task

Working independently, investigate the qualities for a good instructional web site to report to your client. (Pointers are in your course booklet.)

You will create a web site for an assigned client which will be industry based. The web site will be linked to the school web site.

Use the web evaluation guide to report your comments and opinions about each site you visit. Develop a web site template that reflects the effective qualities discovered during your web evaluation. The template will be shared with your client.

You will then meet with your client to develop a customized web site. The client must approve the layout, format, color, and content of the site. Each designer will complete the interview form and secure the signatures required on the signature page.

You and your client must establish a written procedure and schedule to update and maintain the web page for the remainder of the semester.

Process
Once you have been organized into web designer and client you can start working. You may need to refer to the definitions page if you encounter terms you don't understand as it applies to web design. You and your client must work together to complete all pieces of the assignment as described below.

As the web designer your assignments are:

  1. To develop the web site. This will be done using any or all of the following: DreamWeaver, FireWorks or PhotoShop.
  2. To use the CARP Design throughout the site.
  3. To use the TILT Design throughtout the site.
  4. To maintain a journal recording what was accomplished during each meeting with your client. The journal must be saved to your H: drive in your Advanced Web Folder as website journal.
  5. Once your client explains their business to you, visit other similar sites and evaluate them using the web evaluation criteria. This must be completed.
  6. Meet at least three interviews with your client. Complete the interview form.
  7. You must create a storyboard depicting the basic design of the web page. This storyboard must be approved by your client before the actual page is developed.
  8. Develop an actual web page for your client.

Groups will meet with their client to develop an updating process which will ensure the site is maintained.

Resources
The files listed to the right along with some other resources listed will assist you in your assignment.

Evaluation
Your project grade will be based on the following components:

    1. Meet all deadlines.
    2. Complete all handouts.
    3. Completed Story board.
    4. Completed client's Web Site according to design principles.
    5. Completed client evaluation rubric for your project.
    6. Teacher evaluation of site according to web site rubric evaluation form.

Conclusion
Throughout this activity, you have learned how to evaluate web sites and research styles of web sites. You have also interviewed a client to gather information and have designed a web page according to the clients specifications. Finally, you have also simulated an authentic work place experience, working without direct instruction as well as working as a team with your client who has given you feed back and evaluated your work.

Your task now is to record your experiences in a Word document. Save the document as project journal in your advanced web folder. Here are some things to think about as you write your journal:

What have you learned about "web design" after completing this project?
Was it easier or more difficult than you expected?
Did completing this project give you a better understanding of why some web pages are more appealing than others?
How did you feel about your interview with your client?
What areas of this project did you excel at? What areas of this project could you concentrate on improving?
